A significant motion put forward by the Dermatology Aesthetic Nurses Association Ireland (DANAI) was passed at the recent Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation Annual Delegate Conference, marking an important step forward for nurses working in dermatology aesthetic clinical practice.

The motion called on the INMO to engage with the Department of Health, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), and the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) to ensure nurses practising in dermatology aesthetics can access and hold emergency medications, including adrenaline and other life-saving drugs, in the interest of patient safety and safe clinical practice.

A spokesperson for DANAI said: “Conference calls on the INMO to engage with the Department of Health, NMBI and HPRA to ensure nurses working in dermatology aesthetic clinical practice can access and hold emergency medications including adrenaline and other life-saving drugs, in line with provisions available to the general population, in the interest of patient safety and safe clinical practice.”

The motion was successfully passed with the support of delegates representing 50,000 nursing colleagues, highlighting strong backing from across the profession for clearer access to emergency medications in aesthetic healthcare settings.

Following reports of a number of complications arising from aesthetic treatments, including vascular occlusions, the use of emergency prescription medications such as hyaluronidase can be life-saving.

Vascular occlusion – a rare but recognised complication of dermal filler injections – has been reported in some cases and can result in serious outcomes, including blindness or stroke, if swift intervention is not undertaken.

DANAI has expressed their appreciation to section chairperson Cora Murphy and all section members for their work and support in advancing the motion through conference.

The Aesthetics Magazine has contacted the INMO for comment following the passing of the motion.
